Palace of Westminster: restoring a damaged Gothic lantern

A lantern at the Palace of Westminster had been damaged. Verdome carefully removed it, arranged for it to be restored by specialist craftspeople and returned it to its original bracket.

WORKRestoration

Before any repair began, each part of the lantern was examined on the bench, so the work could be planned around what it actually needed. Once restored, it went back on the same wrought iron bracket in the Gothic stonework.

The damage

Damaged in place, removed with care

The lantern hangs from a wrought iron bracket set into the Gothic stonework. It had been damaged, and was covered in tape before being carefully removed from its bracket and packed for transport to the restorers.

The work

Taken apart, assessed and repaired

At the restorers’ workshop the lantern was stripped down on the bench, so the metalwork, glass and fixings could be examined piece by piece before any repair began.
