The commission

A great Chelsea house, relit

At Sloane is a collaboration between hotelier Costes, designer François-Joseph Graf and Cadogan. It stands in red brick and white stucco on Sloane Gardens, and its lighting is the work of many hands: from the globe lanterns at the door to the reading lights beside the beds, in excess of five hundred fittings in all. Jeremy Quantrill was engaged as heritage lighting specialist, and Verdome supplied some of the fittings itself.

The original Benson designs were placed in our hands on loan, so that they could be studied, measured and copied exactly. The brief was exacting. It was not an interpretation and not a tribute, but a faithful reproduction of every fitting, in materials and finishes true to the originals. Each design called for different skills, so Jeremy worked with the craftspeople best suited to it: a collaboration with numerous artisans, each chosen for the design in front of them.

It is the most ambitious project we have undertaken, and the result is a house in which the lighting looks as though it has always been there.

The finished rooms

Light for every room

From the library and lounge to the restaurant, the snug and the bedrooms, the fittings are in daily use. This is what the work looks like once it is finished and lit.
